When checkout breaks, a store owner often asks, “How much could this cost us?” A simple estimate can help prioritize the response, but it should not be presented as proven lost revenue. Not every visitor would have purchased, not every journey may be affected and some shoppers may return later.

The most useful worksheet makes its assumptions visible. RevenueGuard can contribute observed check times and failure scope; it does not measure the exact revenue a business would have earned without the incident.

Start with an explicit scenario

Estimate exposure using four inputs: relevant visits per hour, a comparable conversion rate, average order value and affected duration. Add an estimate of the proportion of those visits affected if the problem concerns only a particular region or journey.

Use a comparable period rather than the busiest hour you can find. A sale campaign, holiday or unusual traffic source can change buying behavior. If the inputs are uncertain, use a low and high case rather than hiding the uncertainty in a single number.

Work through an illustrative calculation

Planning formula

Relevant visits per hour × conversion rate × average order value × affected hours × affected share = estimated gross order-value exposure.

Imagine 200 relevant visits per hour, a 2% conversion rate, a $60 average order value and an estimated 1.5-hour interruption affecting the whole selected audience. The calculation is 200 × 0.02 × $60 × 1.5 × 1 = $360.

This is an invented example, not a RevenueGuard customer result. It estimates gross order-value exposure under those assumptions. It is not net profit, confirmed lost sales or a guarantee of what monitoring would save.

Distinguish observed times from exact outage duration

Suppose a journey passed at 10:00 and failed at 11:00. The failure may have begun at any point between those observations. A later passing result creates a similar uncertainty around recovery unless other evidence supplies a more precise time.

Use the monitoring records as boundaries for your investigation. Record when a human confirmed the symptom and when the repair was verified. With hourly checks and a confirmation retry, detection is not instantaneous.

Adjust for partial impact carefully

A shipping problem for one postcode range may affect fewer shoppers than a storefront-wide failure. A missing payment method may leave an alternative that some customers can use. Conversely, a problem on the only checkout path may have broader impact.

Do not guess that a partial failure is harmless simply because another path passes. State the known scope, then show how different affected-share assumptions change the estimate. If the share is unknown, say so and prioritize learning it.

Include operational work without double counting

Record staff investigation time, customer support effort and any known campaign spend during the interruption separately. These figures can help explain why a clear response process matters even when the order-value estimate is uncertain.

Do not add advertising spend and estimated lost revenue together and call the result a precise loss. They measure different things and may overlap in the business interpretation. Keep the worksheet’s labels clear enough for someone else to review.

Use the estimate to improve a decision

The worksheet should help the responsible person choose a next action: investigate immediately, assess a campaign pause, escalate to the host or prioritize a repair. It should not delay an obvious response while the team searches for perfect numbers.

RevenueGuard supports that decision by showing the configured failed step and evidence. Its contribution is visibility into an observed path, not a promise of outage prevention. Pair the calculation with a short incident response plan.

Review the assumptions after recovery

Compare the estimate with the available store and payment records, acknowledging that the counterfactual remains uncertain. Record which inputs were useful and which were guesses. This gives the next incident a better planning baseline.

The store health dashboard guide explains how to read aggregate orders and recorded payments without confusing them with settled revenue or a complete accounting report.
